Basement Puzzle Walkthrough

Work through the Basement objectives, paper code, alien puzzle, crystal count, and exit checkpoints in Search For The Needle.

Quick answer

What to do

Follow the Basement objectives in order: find the key, pull the levers, solve the alien, paper, and crystal puzzles, then follow the exit objective.

The Basement run has three jobs: find the key in the haystack, pull the levers, and solve three puzzles. Keep the objective panel in view so you know which job is active. The Chapter 2 objectives page covers the wider sequence.

Find the key and pull the levers

Start with the key objective in the haystack. Search the hay until the key task moves forward, then switch to the lever task. Work through the levers you can reach and check the panel after each interaction. When that objective advances, start looking for the puzzle panels.

Puzzle 1: Match the alien tiles

The alien puzzle presents tiles with a black-and-white pattern and a reference arrangement in the interface. Use the reference beside the puzzle instead of trying to remember a sequence. Compare one block at a time: match its shape, check the direction of the marks, then move to the next block. If a row looks close but the puzzle does not advance, compare the blocks again from the same starting corner. Match the pattern on your screen and let the layout determine which tile you inspect next.

Watch Solve Puzzles after you finish. A change in the counter tells you that this puzzle is complete and that you can look for the next one.

Puzzle 2: Read the paper, then use the keypad

Find the paper clue for the current run and check its back. Write down the digits in the order they appear before walking to the keypad. Enter that sequence, then watch the puzzle panel for progress. Examples such as 3534 and 1629 are useful for recognizing the format, but they are not a permanent code. The paper code guide keeps this step separate when you only need the keypad method.

If the panel does not move, return to the paper and check the digit order again. Re-enter the number from that clue rather than copying a number from another run.

Puzzle 3: Count the colored crystals

Look at the colored crystals and count each color separately. Start in one small area, record the count, and continue around the room so you do not count the same crystal twice. Enter the totals in the order requested by the panel. If the puzzle does not accept the entry, divide the room into sections and recount one color at a time before trying again.

Check Solve Puzzles after the panel responds. An intermediate count such as 2/3 means there is still another puzzle to complete; continue until it reaches 3/3.

Check the cage and leave

At Solve Puzzles 3/3, look for the opened cage and the visible exit direction. Follow the next arrow or objective cue on your screen. The Chapter 2 guide helps you place these puzzle steps in the full objective sequence.
